May 2nd, 2014

Trade Commissioner has justified his resounding favouritism at Wagga Wagga this afternoon, producing an impressive turn of foot to win the Listed Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) from stable mate Beyond Thankful and Price Of Glory.

Jumping from the gates well, the Montjeu gelding settled within the pack, four lengths off the pace of early leaders Honourable Aussie, Faust and Trajet, who dictated a particularly quick tempo over the back straight.

Rounding the bend relatively wide, Trade Commissioner allowed Beyond Thankful a noticeable head start, but quickly found his rhythm in taking the lead and finding the line a half-length in the clear.

Co-owner Richard Pegum was understandably thrilled in claiming a maiden Wagga Cup this afternoon, and outlined what the victory means to connections following the race.

“We’ve been trying to do this a long time; I’ve been coming her for 34 year and Gary (Towzell) probably 50 years so for both us, we’re very, very excited” Pegum said.

Jockey Craig Newitt delivered a perfectly timed ride on Trade Commissioner in the Wagga Cup, and was quick to lay the praise on his talented partner.

“He showed his class. He showed a good turn of foot which he didn’t show at Sandown the other day, but he’s been set for the race and it’s good when it comes off” Newitt said immediately after dismounting.

“On top of the ground they’ve always said he’s got a good turn of foot and he’s got a bit of class, they’ve just had a bit of trouble getting him to switch off.

“His last couple he’s really showed that, but he showed his authority today.”

Registering his fourth victory in only 17 race starts to date with victory in the 2014 Wagga Cup, Trade Commissioner has been confirmed to return to the spelling paddock ahead of a busy 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
